První předchůdci skateboardů se objevily pravděpodobně již v průběhu 40. a 50. let 20. století, když si skupinka serfařů z Kalifornie v USA řekla, že by mohli vymyslet taky sport, který by byl podobný surfingu, jen aby nemuseli čekat na vhodné vlny. A tak na surf přimontovali kolečka. Sk8boardy, jaké známe dnes, se začaly objevovat až v 60. letech 20. století.
